The Wiki

Postby NYardley » Thu Nov 04, 2010 4:13 pm

Hi All,

I logged into the Wiki today and the main page was filled with spam (some gambling web address). I deleted it.

Is there a way that we can restrict access to the Wiki so that only we can edit it?

Was there something on the Main Page that needs to be replaced?

The page keeps getting spammed. There's obviously some sort of bot targeting the page.
How can I contact the MediaWiki people to have them help us with a solution.

Thanks,
Nate

One solution would be to install an "Account Confirmation" extension to our Wiki. This extension would require account registration be approved by our Admin. We are new to this but working on it.

Hi Nathan,

Luckily ever since our wiki page set up there were in total only three IPs spamming us.
91.214.45.223
213.5.70.184
79.142.65.199

I blocked them as a temporary procedure at this moment while we're still learning how to protect our site better.
Are you interested in learning wiki management?

Thanks Nathan! Jen and I would love to have your input and help as we maintain our wiki!
Running Wiki is a fun ride, but also entails a lot of learning. Actually for any of us who would be interested in how Wiki works:

MediaWiki is the platform we are using.
New users of Wiki could start with:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_Users_Guide
Since we basically use the same platform as Wikipedia.

If interested in learning about Wiki management:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual
When a specific need arises, one can google "MediaWiki + (your question/goal)", and dig through the relevant topics from the search to find a solution.
